This is a work in progress to compile as comprehensive as possible a listing numbers and titles of individual Continent Stereoscopic Publishing Company stereographs of Arizona. If you have examples that are not on this list, or valiant titles for any of the numbers or captions I would appreciate hearing from you. Ideally I would like to obtain either a xerox copy or scan for my files as well. Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.

From their New York offices, the Continent Stereoscopic Company published stereographs from 1870 to about 1890. They claimed to have released over 2,000 individual titles. Though known primarily for lower quality images, many acquired or pirated from other photographers, their offerings do include many high-quality images clearly made from original negatives.

The earliest views of Arizona that appear to be original date from c. 1877, consistent with Conklin’s travels. Many stereograph mounts of their series “Art & Pictorial Views of the American Continent” include a printed ad for Conklin on the verso. The stereographs of Arizona produced by the Continent Stereoscopic Company from this era, located to date, can be clustered into two groups. One mirrors Conklin’s travels, and illustrates their expedition. Many depict members of the party at locations described in Picturesque Arizona, such as Pima Villages, Casa Grande, and mining works in the Santa Ritas.

The other group of stereographs are illustrations of Arizona during the 1870s that are referenced in Picturesque Arizona but depict areas that were not visited by Conklin and his fellow travelers. Such images include views of Prescott, the Hopi, and the San Francisco peaks of northern Arizona. Several of these images have been identified as originally taken by photographers such as Dudley Flanders and Henry Buehman.

The alignment between the Continent images located to date and Conklin’s book is so close that it appears that he must have used these images, and contemporary print and personal interactions, as the basis for his stories in areas he was unable to visit in person. Aside from the issue of which photographer originally created these views, the Continent views provide a wonderful range of views of life in Arizona and the West from the second half of the 1870.

If you have additional information about the Continent Stereoscopic Publishing Company, examples of stereographs that are not on this list, or variant titles I would appreciate hearing from you. Ideally, I would like to obtain either a Xerox copy or scan for my files as well.
