This is a work in progress to compile as comprehensive as possible a listing numbers and titles of individual Keystone View Company stereographs of Arizona. Each listing will include a brief biographical overview, in addition to the checklist of stereoviews complied to date.

Photographer, B. Lloyd Singley, started the Keystone View Company in Meadville, Pennsylvania. His success with stereographs of the 1892 French Creek Flood encouraged him to start producing and distributing stereographs. His business successfully competed with a growing number of publishers, including the Littleton View Company, B.W. Kilburn Company, H.C. White, and Underwood & Underwood, all seeking a national marketplace.

The Keystone View Company corporate headquarters, printing and production plant was located in Meadville. In the mid-1890s, the Payne family opened a branch office in Saint Louis, Missouri. Father O. E. Payne managed the office and son Harlan H. Payne was principal salesman. Uncle Arden P. B. Payne was a photographer who traveled worldwide making stereo images for Keystone to distribute. It is not clear whether any of the Arizona views produced by the Keystone View Company were originally taken by Payne.

B.L. Singley produced virtually all the photographs used in the early years of the Keystone Company and he remained active as a Keystone photographer. Beginning in 1897, the company hired additional photographers and employed over 150 contract photographers. Few of these photographers identified their work and Keystone branded virtually all its output with the company name. This policy makes the work of individual photographers particularly difficult to identify, as is information about where and when they traveled for Keystone.

Two of the Keystone photographers have been identified as having worked in Arizona. Singley visited Arizona in the early 20th century and photographed the Petrified Forest. He appears in at least one view posed on the famous fallen log bridge.193 Two decades later another Keystone photographer, Phillip Brigandi, visited Arizona and made images of the Grand Canyon in October 1925. It appears that he produced both stereographs and lantern slides, many of which were hand colored.

In addition, after a rough start with light-inconsistent views, Keystone strove to build a reputation for consistently high quality views, most in cool tone silver prints which looked more contemporary than the sepia toned views offered by the Underwoods. By the early 20th century, Keystone had expanded and was operating additional branch offices in Oregon, New York City, Toronto, and London. By 1900 the Keystone catalog included 8,000 titles.

The company quickly copied the offerings of Underwood & Underwood, offering boxed sets including topical subjects and travel sets. Keystone established a formal education department in 1905 in an attempt to compete in the market which Underwood had identified. Keystone produced both stereographs and lantern slides with printed pamphlets and captions on the reverse of the mount.

After competing head-to-head with other publishers for over a decade, Keystone began consolidating the industry by acquiring its competitors. Eventually their catalog included the images produced by: the Kilburn Company; Underwood & Underwood; the H.C. White Company; and Berry, Kelly & Chadwick. Keystone also acquired rights to the Underwood guidebooks and continued to market educational stereo boxed sets to schools and libraries.

After World War I the Keystone View Company was the principal stereograph publisher. They eventually accumulated over 2,000,000 negatives and published over 43,000 individual stereograph titles, producing tens of millions of stereographs before ceasing production in 1939. After stopping, Keystone continued to sell their existing inventory until about 1970.

If you have additional information about the Underwood & Underwood publishing company, examples of stereographs that are not on this list, or variant titles for any of the numbers or captions I would appreciate hearing from you. Ideally, I would like to obtain either a Xerox copy or scan for my files as well.

Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.
